The medical staff and administration of Greenwood Leflore Hospital extend condolences to the family of Dr. R. Bruce Newell, who passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
Dr. Newell was a native of Meridian, Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1972. Dr. Newell completed his internship and a year of general surgery residency at Lloyd Noland Hospital in Fairfield, Alabama, and was a resident in the orthopedic surgery program at the University of Alabama Hospital. Following his training he remained in Birmingham as a member of Norwood Clinic and was active on the staff of Carraway Methodist Medical Center for 15 years.
Dr. Newell then practiced as an orthopedic surgeon in Greenwood for 23 years, retiring from Greenwood Leflore Hospital in 2016. He served three years on the hospital’s Executive Committee, which included serving as its chairman for one year.
Over the years, he participated in the Jefferson County Medical Society, Alabama Medical Society, Alabama Orthopedic Society, American Medical Society, Southern Medical Society, the Birmingham Academy of Medicine Mississippi Medical Society, and Mississippi Orthopedic Society. In 1978 he was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Dr. Newell will be deeply missed by his former colleagues, co-workers and his patients.
