Electronic Medical Record

EMR is an acronym for Electronic Medical Record.  This refers to a paperless, digital and computerized system of maintaining patient data.  It enhances patient care by providing a more efficient way to document patient care and allowing for fast, accurate exchange of patient health information among physicians, hospitals, and other health care providers.  The EMR contains complete medical information about a patient, including medications, current and resolved diagnosis/problems, labs, x-rays, and numerous other health related details.

At GLH, most of our clinics, as well as our hospital, are using an EMR system to document patient care.  The EMR allows our clinic and hospital physicians to have immediate access to the patient’s chart whether the patient is in the clinic or the hospital.
 

Ethical Issues

The patient, or his/her legally authorized representative, in consultation with the hospital’s treatment staff, shall make all legally permitted decisions concerning ethical issues arising in the provision of care, treatment and services including resolution of conflict, withholding of resuscitative services and the foregoing or withdrawal of life sustaining treatment and care at the end of life. The patient’s family can contact the patient representative at 1-877-693-2464. Where the right to make decisions about care has been legally delegated to another, reasonable steps will be taken to make sure the patient has a right to know that delegation has occurred. To the extent permitted by law, the patient has the right to formulate Advance Directives in and appoint a surrogate to make health care decisions on his/her behalf.

Interpreters

The hospital has access to interpreters for a number of foreign languages should a patient require it. Please contact your nurse for assistance.

 

Patient Education

Channel 98 is the hospital’s closed-circuit television station, which features a number of health-related programs. If you do not have a Channel 98 program schedule in your room, please ask your nurse for one.

 

Mail

Letters and parcels that arrive after you have been discharged are forwarded to your home. Stationery may be purchased in the Gift Shop. Outgoing mail goes in the post office box outside in the main entrance.

Flowers and Newspapers

Flowers can be delivered to your room by a visitor or by the florist. Please keep in mind, large plants and flowers are difficult to deliver and remove upon discharge. Newspapers may be purchased in the main hallway on the first floor of the hospital.

Notary Public

The services of a notary are available for patients free of charge. For information call the nursing office at ext. 2657.

For the Hearing Impaired

A telecommunications device is available to help hearing- impaired patients or patients who want to communicate with a hearing-impaired relative or friend. The hospital also has access to sign language interpretation. Please contact your nurse for assistance.
